Everglades Holiday Park and the Gator Boys Alligator Rescue- Lending a Helping Hand
Visit Everglades Holiday Park and you're sure to see some pretty amazing sights. Families with small children, couples, even seniors come from all over to meet and greet with South Florida's most exciting reptile- the American alligator. But while gliding across the River of Grass in an airboat is amazing, Everglades gators aren't as healthy as they used to be, and lack of food has caused many to roam in search of dinner. Desperate, hungry gators wind up in swimming pools, lakes, even on doorsteps leaving wildlife biologists and animal lovers alike looking for solutions. Everglades Holiday Park is proud to provide a natural and safe resting spot for Everglades gators. Here's a little bit about how the Gator Boys Alligator Rescue is lending a helping hand to our well deserving friends in need.
A Bleak Future
The American alligator is easily the most recognized symbol of the Everglades and tourists and residents who visit Everglades Holiday Park expect to see them. But gator populations are declining in Florida, and the state's most iconic resident may be in trouble. Healthy alligators mean a healthy Everglades- and a sign that the ecosystem is doing well. Yet when the wetland has a problem, it impacts all Everglades wildlife. Over the years, in efforts to protect the coastline from flooding, a series of projects have ushered water out of the Everglades, impacting the natural flow of fish, making it more difficult for alligators and other wildlife to find food.
Everglades Holiday Park and the Gator Boys Alligator Rescue
The Gator Boys work to rescue as many alligators as they can throughout the Everglades. However, state law prohibits them from releasing animals in excess of 4-ft into the wild. As a result, when the Gator Boys rescue a gator with nowhere to go, they bring it to the park for safekeeping. The Gator Boys have an obvious passion for helping these amazing animals and the conservation aspect of what they do is helping the Ecosystem and it's most popular resident.
