Florida Manatees at Everglades Holiday Park Airboat Tours
Holiday Park Everglades National Park airboat tours has exciting news for animal lovers and conservationists: experts have officially removed the Florida Manatee from the Endangered Species list! The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced in Early April that it would downgrade the West Indian manatee from "endangered" to "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act, something our Miami airboat tours are very excited about.
Manatees are large aquatic mammals, commonly referred to as a “Sea cows”. They have grayish brown color and thick skin. They are well-known for their slow, lumbering movements through the water. Everglades Holiday Park reports that the same peacefulness and tranquility displayed by manatees is what landed them on the Endangered List to begin with. These mammals have a hard time fleeing from boat propellers and predators, with an estimated 668 deaths between 2008 and 2014.
Making its way off the endangered list, the manatee is currently positioned on the threatened list, which may not sound better, but our Everglades airboat tour company is happy to say that it indicates that the habitat and the population of the manatee is making a comeback! Today, there are an estimated 6,620 Florida manatees, a subspecies of the West Indian manatee, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service.
Florida residents have been working to protect the Florida manatee since the 1970s, even creating a special license plate to create awareness for the matter. Holiday Park Everglades boat tours says there is still plenty of work to be done to protect the Florida Manatees in the Everglades. Everglades National Park will continue to uphold environmental regulations that protect wildlife and water quality, as well as implement laws that control human activity, which will minimize watercraft-related manatee deaths.
